Men gets 14 years sentence for ‘lasing’ helicopter

In December 2013, 26 -year-old Patrick Rodriguez was sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for using a high-powered laser pointer to interfere a police helicopter with his 23-year-old girlfriend Lorraine Coleman during the summer night in 2012. Lorraine Coleman also would face a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Deliberately targeting aircraft with laser is not just a prank but a big crime, because the visual interference on pilots may lead a fatal outcome. According to a statistics in 2013, there are 3,960 such incidents happened, about 11 cases per day, the reason Rodriguez getting such heavy sentence is that the judge considered Rodriguez had other criminal records, including gang affiliation and illegal acts in his probation.
