Colgate had troubles marketing in Spanish-speaking countries as their brand name translates to “Go hang yourself.”

Challenge

Colgate marketing was confronted with great difficulties in Spanish-speaking countries, because Colgate means “Go hang yourself” in Spanish, but it’s still very popular in South America.

Similar coincidence, Mitsubishi Pajero has to change its name to Montero, because pájaro is a very vulgar word: penis (vulgar).

A Chinese auto brand, BYD Auto (Build your dreams) was confused with its name, because in Chinese language, BYD is the abbreviation of “Son of Bitch.”
